Columbo: The vanishing clock from “A Stitch in Crime”

It’s one of the few times,
in Columbo, we see Peter Falk get visibly upset.  He does here with Leonard Nimoy as the triple-murderer wannabee in “A Stitch in Crime”.  The confrontation in Dr. Barry Mayfield’s office comes with interesting, almost legendary rumors with what Columbo slammed the desk with.

I long thought Columbo slammed Dr. Mayfield’s clock onto the desk.  Why?  Probably because Dr. Mayfield gave it so much attention during his call when he “learned” Sharon Martin was killed.  It was also because of an unintended illusion.

Not to mention Columbo’s hands are in different positions, the clock disappears between angles.  Though consciously, I see the thermos, sub-consciously I’m wondering about the clock.  When it reappears, it satisfied my longing for logic and justice in the universe.  However, the video does not lie.  Columbo takes the coffee thermos.  It would have made more of the point if he would have grabbed Mayfield’s precious clock.

You can clearly see the clock in the lower right hand side of the second pic. It appears to be farther away from the coffee, but it’s right there.

Thanks for reading! I debate its “clearly” there since its mostly off screen and moved to the other side of the lamp. Now that I look … what happened to the desk lamp in the final shot?

Yeah, I would argue that it’s the lamp that disappears, not the clock. I just watched it last night and the lamp definitely vanishes.
