The Shining: Freezer,
takes a closer look at The Overlook Hotel’s deceptive floor plan. The freezer is one of many places where, if you turn your back, will trick you. It is a special place for the Shining and a peek into the future.
As Dick Hallorann escorts Wendy and Danny through the vast kitchen, he makes a brief stop at the freezer. With his left hand reaching for the freezer’s door, we see a chalk board over Hallorann’s right shoulder. We clearly see the kitchen in the background. As mother and child dressed in patriotic red, white, and blue, Dick brags about the select cuts of meat. All are dressed in “body bags”, each having a frozen glaze and each indistinguishable from another. Regardless, if they’re pork, beef, or lamb, they’re just meat to Wendy and Danny.
Exiting the freezer, the hallway is strangely different. Both the kitchen and the chalkboard have disappeared. Have they have stepped out in another part of the hotel? Wendy senses something is wrong, but can’t quite put her finger on it. In fact, she is distracted by Dick’s sudden knowledge of Danny’s nickname, “Doc”. The door doesn’t open to the right, but the left.
As Dick, Wendy, and Danny continue their tour, we recognize the chalkboard to their left and they are returning to the kitchen. They have stepped out of the doors on the other side of the hallway even though the door never closes behind them. The Overlook is playing and confusing them. What possible other places reminds us of freezing conditions, confusion, and death?
