Betrayal at House on the Hill: Session (10.16.2016)

we break out Betrayal at House on the Hill.  It’s a game session of four.  The professor takes three mental patients out on a late night field trip.  What could go wrong?  The answer is most everything.  Read carefully how the house betrays hero and villains alike.  This session concluded on October 16, 2016.

Professor Longfellow, 57 yo
Speed 4.2, Might 3, Sanity 3.2, Knowledge 5.4

The sadistic doctor from the city’s sanitarium, begins his cruel experiment with three of his most troubled patients.  After downing his third bottle of cheap wine, he pays of an orderly and quietly escorts the mentally ill into the night and through the cemetery over the hill.  Professor Longfellow takes his anxious three to the doors of an empty house with a sordid history.

Jenny LeClerc, 21 yo
Speed 4.2, Might 4.2, Sanity 4.2, Knowledge 3.2

Once a soccer player, Jenny suffered a concussion as goalie during the last seconds of a champion match.  The ball had bounced off her head and into her goal costing her team the game.  Since then, depression led her into reading books of fantasy and convincing herself she was experiencing the world she was reading about.

Ox Bellows, 23 yo
Speed 4, Might 5.2, Sanity 3, Knowledge 3.1

Once a celebrated high school football player, he couldn’t make it on a college team.   Dropping out of his liberal arts program and gaining 90 pounds, he took a job as slot machine vendor at the local casino.  It wasn’t too long before the musical jingles, flashing lights, and sounds of coins dropping hypnotized him into prancing on the casino floor pretending he was on the 50-yard line in uniform and pads.

Vivian Lopez, 42 yo
Speed 4.2, Might 2.3, Sanity 4.3, Knowledge 5.3

The story goes Vivian fell off her horse and proceeded to hear the horses talk to her.  Since no one had witnessed the accident, others say she made it all up to forget the tragedy of her husband’s death suffering a heart attack in a makeshift haunted house attraction on Halloween.

— Turn 1 —

Mistakes and omissions will happen.

The group stands in the Entrance Hall.  The front door is to the north and the foyer south.

Longfellow,
Speed 4.2, Might 3, Sanity 3.2, Knowledge 5.4

After leading his three patients indoor, the cruel professor races south through the Foyer and Upstairs Landing and takes the doorway directly south into a Creaky Hallway.

Jenny,
Speed 4.2, Might 4.2, Sanity 4.2, Knowledge 3.2

Immediately steps into the room to the east.  She finds the Mystic Elevator.  After pressing button to the elevator, nothing happens.

Ox,
Speed 4, Might 5.2, Sanity 3, Knowledge 3.1

Chases the professor to the Upper Landing but jumps through the doorway east to the Tower.  Event: Mystic Slide: The floor falls under Ox’s feet.  His might controls a slide underneath and he winds up safely in the Foyer on the ground floor.

Vivian,
Speed 4.2, Might 2.3, Sanity 4.3, Knowledge 5.3

Takes a step to the west into the Charred Room.  Omen: Crystal Ball.  Vivian makes a Haunt Roll of (6) against (1) Omen.

— Turn 2 —

Longfellow,
Speed 4.2, Might 3, Sanity 3.2, Knowledge 5.4

Takes a step south into a Statuary Corridor.  Event: Night View.  He sees a vision of a ghostly couple walking the grounds silently strolling in their wedding best.  Longfellow recognizes the ghosts and calls out to them.  The ghosts whispers dark secrets and Longfellow’s Knowledge climbs to 6.

Jenny,
Speed 4.2, Might 4.2, Sanity 4.2, Knowledge 3.2

Stepping out of the Mystic Elevator into the Entrance Hall, she steps south into the Foyer before heading east exploring the Organ Room.  Event: Funeral.  Jenny sees an open coffin and suddenly finds herself inside it!  It was only a disturbing vision.  However, her Sanity drops to 4.1.

Ox,
Speed 4, Might 5.2, Sanity 3, Knowledge 3.1

Heads west from the Foyer and explores the Game Room.  Event: Secret Passage.  Ox discovers a moldy tunnel leading the the upstairs Creaky Hallway.

Vivian,
Speed 4.2, Might 2.3, Sanity 4.3, Knowledge 5.3
Inventory: Crystal Ball

From the Charred Room, Vivian goes north to explore the Gardens.  Event: The Voice.  Hearing “I’m under the floor, buried under the floor …”.  Vivian searches and finds a item under the floor.  It is Armor.

Steps south and explores the Junk Room.  Omen: Holy SymbolLongfellow Sanity climbs to 5.1.  Makes Haunt Roll of (9) against an Omen of (2).

From the Organ Room, she explores south into the Dining Room.  Item: Amulet of the AgesMight climbs to 4.3.  Speed

Ox,
Speed 4, Might 5.2, Sanity 3, Knowledge 3.1

Goes south from the Game Room and explores a Dusty Hallway.  Goes west and explores the Library*.  His Knowledge climbs to 3.2.  Event: Disquieting Sounds.  After hearing a baby’s cry, a scream, and breaking glass, Ox’s Sanity climbs to 4.

From the Gardens, she continue north and explores a Coal Chute and immediately ends up in the Basement Landing.  She steps westward and explores a Larder*.  She finds Pickpocket’s Gloves.  Her Might climbs to 4.1.

Exits the Junk Room without trouble east and explores the Chapel*.  Event: Rotten.  The smell is the room is horrible and smells like death.  His strong sense of Sanity helps keep focus.  His Sanity climbs to 5.2.  The Chapel helps climb his Sanity to 6.

From the Organ Room, she spends all her movement points at the Library*.  Her knowledge climbs to 4.2.

Stepping north, Ox explores a Collapsed Room.  He falls into the basement Wine Cellar and takes (1) physical damage.  Might falls to 5.1.  He finds a Music Box.

Exiting the Larder to the east to the Basement Landing, she goes north into the Research Laboratory.  Going north, she finds the Pentagram Chamber.  Omen: Girl.  Vivian finds and rescues a Girl companion.  Her Sanity climbs to 5.  Knowledge to climbs to 5.4.  With (3) Omens, makes a Haunt Roll of (6).

Longfellow must make it through the Junk Room again and does so with no issues.  He turns south to explore the Attic.  Event: Bloody Vision.  Blood drips from the ceiling, down the walls and furniture.  In a blink, it’s gone.  Longfellow’s great Sanity results in gaining +1.  Sanity to 7 (max).

Takes a step east out of the Library into the Dusty Hallway.  Steps south into the Kitchen.  Omen: Mask.  Jenny chooses not to put on the mask.  With (4) Omens, makes a Haunt Roll of (5).

Steps east into the Larder* and stays.  Gaining 1, his Might increases to 5.2.

Leaving the Pentagram Chamber forces Vivian to make and pass a Knowledge test.  She steps south to the Basement Landing and chooses east to find an escape.  She discovers an Underground Lake.  Event: Smoke. Smoke fills the room blocking line of sight from adjacent rooms.

Climbing out of the Attic, Longfellow passes a speed test into the Junk Room.  Exiting the Junk Room, he passes a might test into the Statuary Corridor.  He continues to the Creaky Hallway and takes the Secret Passage to the Game Room on the ground floor.

From the Kitchen, Jenny moves east into the Graveyard.  Event: Burning Man.  She sees a man on fire running through the room leaving a fiery skull.  Recovering, her Sanity increases to 4.3.

Needing to find the way out, Ox steps east into the Basement Landing and south into the Catacombs.  Omen: Book.  Ox’s Knowledge climbs to 5.2.  With (5) Omens, makes a Haunt Roll of (6).

Just as desperate as Ox, she steps north out of the Underground Lake discovering the Vault.  Event: Hideous Shriek.  A soul-rendering shriek rattles each of the explorers.

Ox (4): Resists.
Vivian (5): Resists.

Realizing some of his party is lost in the basement, he steps out the Game Room to the Mystic Elevator.  It takes him to the western edge of the Wine Cellar.  He calls out the others.

Stepping out of the Graveyard, challenged her Sanity and her Knowledge drops to 4.1. She moves into the Foyer.

Ox runs to the Mystic Elevator joining Professor Longfellow.  They wait for Vivian.

Vivian knowledge opens the Vault.  She empties it, taking away a Medical Kit and Healing Salve.  She moves as far as she can, making it to the Wine Cellar just short of the Mystic Elevator.

From the Wine Cellar, she joins Longfellow and Ox to the west in the Mystic Elevator.  The elevator takes them to the ground floor west of the Creaky Hallway.  She continues through the Creaky Hallway to its east discovering the Abandoned Room.  Omen: Bite.  Something bites Vivian but she fends off the attack.  With (6) Omens, makes a Haunt Roll of (5).  The haunt, United We Stand, starts!

Wanting to use the Mystic Elevator to explore new rooms in the basement, (thanks to Jenny), the elevator shakes to the basement causing Ox physical damage.  Might drops to 5.1.  Moves west and discovers the Gymnasium*.  Omen: Skull.  The Gymnasium helps increase his Speed to 5.1.

Scrambling away from Vivian, Ox enters the last known unexplored doorway south and discovers the Furnace Room.  Omen: Medallion. He fails to overheat the furnace. Ending his turn here, he takes 1 physical damage.  Speed decreases to 2.3.

Vivian chases Ox and attacks but Might rolls are equal at 4 apiece.  No damage inflicted.

Jenny wears the mask.  Her Knowledge increases to 5.  Her Sanity decreases to 4.1.  Rolling a “4”, she fails to overheat the furnace.  Ending her turn here, her Speed drops to 4.2.

Tries again and successfully overheats the furnace.  He scrambles out to the Servant’s Quarters.

Running into the Catacombs, she cannot find her way out.  The Wine Cellar is on fire.

Escaping Vivian’s snare he stumbles into the Basement Landing.  The Larder catches fire taking the villain, Vivian with it.

Epilogue,

Jenny, regains her senses and escapes the Catacombs and makes it to the Entrance Hall after climbing over Longfellow’s body.  Unfortunately, the fire has no where to go but the Basement Landing and kills Ox.  Jenny escapes through the front door crawling out and away from the burning house.  With her dog in her arms, she watches the house collapse, burning into smoldering embers.  She vows never to return to the asylum.  This experience is a story she will keep to herself.
