Scooby Doo: Ghastly Ghost Town

Scooby Doo meets The Three Stooges,
in the premiere episode of The New Scooby Doo Movies.  Keeping true to the animation style of Scooby Doo, Where are You!, it pads an additional 22 minutes of hilarity and mystery.  Well, not really.  “Ghastly Ghost Town” is a story about a western tourist trap that is bleeding money and the center of the conspiracy lies underground.  If it sounds familiar, it is.

The guest stars

The Three Stooges, jumpsuit laden proprietors of a run down ghost town amusement park. Fortunately for them, they stumble upon an uranium mine.

The villain, the mystery, and the technology

Geronimo and The Gunslinger, two inanimate objects mysteriously come to life in an haunted theme park flooded with radon gas.

Underground uranium mine, exploited for illegal export.

Mechanical “Tyrone-a-saur” and a film projection of a dancing Geronimo, complete with soundtrack.

Crunch and Rhino, captured in costume.

Unanswered questions of curiosity

Fred is outran by someone in an inflatable rubber cactus?

Half of the cage’s bars are missing. Chances of a rampaging animal running loose are absolute.

Why would a pouch of uranium ore have a dollar sign on it?

Let’s get this straight. The plan was to sneak across the border into Mexico unseen in this?

Final thoughts

A remake of “Mine Your Own Business” that had an extra 22 minutes of story filled with half its content.  With a toned-down re-interpretation of the iconic vaudeville team, “Ghostly Ghost Town” is padded with distractions and meaningless skits.  What is left out is a chilling backstory.  With villains making their few appearances in different costumes, their debut episode was difficult to make it through.  As a fan of The Three Stooges, its nice to imagine they’re entering retirement with one last classic short.
